Is Jesus Just A Man?
The Bible Presents Jesus as More than a Man
Being omnipotent, omniscient, eternal, and the Creator; and having the glory of God and the ability and power to forgive sins are attributes that are true of deity. They are not true of a mere human. According to the Bible, all of the above are true of Jesus. Since Jesus has the traits of deity, He is God. (The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are the one God.) Corresponding to His nature, the title, "Immanuel," which means "God with us" is given to Jesus (Matthew 1:23). Because Jesus is equal with God (Phil 2:5-6), He receives worship from men and from angels (Matthew 14:33; 28:9,16, 17; John 9:38; Hebrews 1:6).
Because Jesus claimed to be equal with God and said He existed before Abraham, Jewish leaders tried to kill Him (John 5:18; 8:59).
When the apostle Thomas called Jesus his Lord and God, Jesus indicated his belief was correct (John 20:28-29). Even the Father calls the Son, "God" (Hebrews 1:8).
The New Testament identifies Jesus as being "YHWH" (Jehovah) of the Old Testament. Matthew 3:3 states that LORD (YHWH) in Isaiah 40:3 is a reference to the Lord Jesus. In addition, Romans 10:9-13 shows that the use of LORD (YHWH) in Joel 2:32 refers to the Lord Jesus.
Jesus has the Traits and Abilities of Deity
Jesus is Omnipotent -
"... Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God." 1 Corinthians 1:24 (See also Colossians 1:16-17; Revelation 1:8.)
Jesus is Omniscient -
"In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Colossians 2:3 (See also John 2:24-25; John 16:30; 1 Corinthians 1:24.)
Jesus is Eternal -
"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever." Hebrews 13:8 (See also 1 John 1:1-2; John 1:1; Micah 5:2.)
Jesus is Creator -
"All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made." John 1:3 (See also 1 Corinthians 8:6; Colossians 1:16-17; Hebrews 1:2, 10.)
Jesus has all glory -
"Who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high" Hebrews 1:3 (See also John 17:5.)
Jesus has the ability and power to forgive sin -
"... who can forgive sins but God only? ... Jesus ... said unto them ... that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he said to the sick of the palsy,) I say unto you, Arise, and take up your bed, and go your way into your house." Mk 2:7-11
As God the Son, Jesus became a man for the purpose of dying without sin as the payment for sins (John 1:14; Matthew 20:28). The death of a mere man cannot pay for the sins of many. Thus, it is good news that Jesus is man and God, so that He can represent us and pay for the sins of the world with His death.
You Must Believe in Jesus
You must repent of your sin and cease having any confidence that your works will save you. You must believe in Jesus as your Savior, Lord, and God. A person who believes in the person of Jesus and in His sacrificial work on the cross will be forgiven of sins and will be saved.
Make certain you believe that Jesus is God. Otherwise the warning of Jesus applies to you:
-
"... if you believe not that I am He, you shall die in your sins." John 8:24
- "... Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shalt be saved, and your house." Acts 16:31
"For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9
